A Public Service

In honor of the McCain/Palin campaign's frequent use of distortion, lies, cynical fear-mongering, and overall mean-spirited bullshit, I'd like to show you a current photograph of Sarah Palin before seeing her handlers and makeup people.

Truly as gorgeous outside as she is in.

I love it! And oh, too true. America doesn't realize the danger these people represent to a free society.

And Stu, it's been many years since I last saw you back in Evanston where we grew up - I wasn't sure it was you until I saw your brothers Tom and John. Not sure if you'll remember the ugly kid who used to play hockey in your basement and bumming around Haven Middle School...

Delighted to see a great voice for common sense back in Chicago!

It's funny because it's true... and horrifying because it's true...

I had to close my eyes and hope I clicked on the comment link.

While Illinois is a lock for Obama (and Durbin will cruise to reelection), there's still several important reasons to be sure to vote. The most important and overlooked one is the constitutional convention question. Reformers are pushing for this, arguing it's the only way to achieve real reform in Illinois. They may be right, but the risks are just too great. Think of the states that allow "proposition" votes and the things that get passed. Harsh anti-immigrant laws passed (easily) in Arizona and California -- I mean, hardcore, not "amnesty/reform" stuff that reasonable people can disagree about (Cali's was so draconian that the courts ended up gutting it). There hasn't been a single gay marriage/civil union ban that hasn't passed to date (the polls show the California one is close). So when the supporters say "don't worry, everything will be put to an up or down vote," history says to worry a lot.

Another reason is Obama -- while the polls look good for him now, remember Reagan: the bigger the mandate, the more power he has. (As some other rants on Stu's blog demonstrate, I'm far from a fan of Obama's, but with a slowing economy and the Dems poised, like 1980 and 1994, for a big off-year tumble, his window of opportunity to pass progressive legislation could be short).

The last one, if you live in the 10th Congressional District, is Mark Kirk, who has done a masterful job of flying under the radar and convincing the media (and voters) that he's a moderate republican along the lines of Susan Collins or Lincoln Chaffee. He's actually a chamber of commerce tool who after a decade in office has no more than a half-thimble worth of clout in D.C.

You'll find this amusing.

A right-wing radio host accuses Obama of creating an "O flag" and hilarious complications ensue.
