Just received today from the Cubs' media relations department:

CHICAGOThe Chicago Cubs this afternoon issued the following update on right-handed pitcher Mark Prior:

Mark Prior this morning made his extended spring training debut in Mesa, AZ. After completing his first two innings of work, Mark experienced discomfort in his right shoulder and exited the game.

Mark is scheduled to see noted orthopedic specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum in California for further evaluation over the next several days.

No further updates on Mark’s condition are expected today.

Goodbye, Kurt

Kurt Vonnegut, one of my favorite writers--someone who really helped me focus what I felt about the world--is dead at 84.

This is from his final work, A Man Without a Country:

When the last living thing
has died on account of us,
how poetical it would be
if Earth could say,
in a voice floating up
perhaps
from the floor
of the Grand Canyon,
“It is done.”
People did not like it here.
